Attempting to obey God and follow Jesus Christ our Lord

How to Inherit Eternal Life

Luke 10:25-28

And behold a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, say, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

He said to him, “What is written in the law? what is your reading of it?”

So he answered and said, ” ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.'”

And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”

Now how do I love The Lord with all my heart, all my soul, all my strength, all my mind? And what does it mean to love your neighbor as yourself? Could I have a answer please?

    • That is a great question and I will be honest in saying that sometimes I don’t treat myself very well. But that is the essence of the statement isn’t it? When you love yourself, if you are normal, and you are a Christian, you want what you do to be something that God and Jesus would approve of. If you love yourself and you love God, you want who you are to be a light in the darkness and to glorify God, not something that would bring shame to Him. It is not that we expect our neighbors to act like we do, although that would be nice, but we all have free will and we make the choice to serve God, we leave that choice to our neighbors as well, we don’t force our will upon them. We stand as an example and offer them the opportunity. At the same time we are expected to stand for what God wants, and point out when things will bring them to judgment and final destruction. That is the love of a father for a child, we can’t protect them in every case, but we must warn them when what they are doing will cost them their eternal life. Love is a gift and giving of ourselves is important to our own salvation, but it is a gift, not something to be done by force or pressure. If giving isn’t done freely, it counts for nothing. As followers of Christ, we strive to reach heaven, if we love our neighbors, we must give them the opportunity to do the same and obtain eternal life because this world is not our final home. We treat them with love and respect, but as we would not pervert God’s word and His will, His commandments, we also can not stand by without warning others when they fall short, this is not judgment, that is not our goal, this is striving to save their immortal soul. We find the answers on how we are to be in the Bible itself, we choose to follow the word we are given, we pray that all our neighbors will choose as well. We be the example for them. Love is giving of ourselves, God showed us by the example He gave of His Son. His Son gave Himself. We follow His words and do what He requires, that is what is loving our neighbors as ourselves. I have heard so many people say “live and let live”, but in truth what you are doing when you do that is just the opposite, you are living to let die and that is not love of yourself or your neighbor because their blood will be upon you if you have done nothing but stand by and watch them make choices that will lead to their eternal death. What a shame that would be if we were to just watch while people we were commanded to love, make the choice for death without us warning them.
